The idea that doctors should report unfit motorists is round the bend

Posted by Steve Orme on September 26, 2008 4:15 PM |

Big Brother is suggesting that doctors should be responsible for reporting 'unfit' drivers to the Ministry of Love so that they can be vaporised. Or at least their licences can.
Short of presenting with both your eyes poked out or some clear and present appalling affliction of the capabilities, a situation which probably precludes driving on a voluntary basis, I fail to see this as a very safe option.

Just looking around my own family we have several cases where diagnosis has been iffy and the dispensing of debilitating drugs a free and easy option for the GP.
In fact, looking at the ugly bunch once again, the dog has had the best medical treatment by a country mile.
Frankly I don't want the doctor distracted by having one eye on your ability to parallel park while rummaging about looking for the cause of that nasty discharge.
But if this is to be the case I think, in the interests of fairness, motorists would have a similar privilege. And be encouraged to report dangerous doctors.
