Saab was not actually trying to convince you the plane could land on a car, or indeed that you would become a handsome fighter pilot if you bought this old 900
When someone says to you ‘ooh, I could eat a milkman’s horse between two bread vans’, or ‘I’ll go to the foot of our stairs and kiss your aunty’ they don’t actually have a pony butty or naked twister in mind. It’s a figure of speech.
So when Saab adverts showed pictures of hoof marks and claimed more horsepower for less carbon they did not actually mean the only emission from the 9-3 Bio Power was recycled oats and grass.
What they did say was that carbon dumping was down by 70%. That, you could work out, out, means a bio fuel footprint of 30%.
Now the advertising watchdog has told Saab off. Naughty Saab. The ASA says 30% is a considerable amount but people would be misled into thinking that bio fuel did not add a significant amount of carbon to the sky.
Look it was a advert. Only the very young and the very silly take such things literally. The are selling a dream based around a reality. But, personally, think 70% is a fair old saving.
Would that there was a watchdog to prevent bandwagonists and swivel-eyed fundamentalists spouting out and out lies about the effect of cars on the environment.
