Many councils in Britain are now blowing all their road safety grants on speed cameras. Surely
not.
A survey in Auto Express found that 80% of the cash raised from cameras – around £85million a year – is going on even more speed cameras.
Many areas spent their entire grant on Gatsos. These include London, which gets the most at £10.5m, Surrey, Suffolk, South Yorks, Notts, Herts, Dorset and Cumbria. North Yorks is alone in having no fixed camera sites.
Councils are drawn like moths to roadside electrical goods. And wasting money.
There is a matrix board I pass every morning which has been promising ‘waterfront delays’ for the past six months.
It would be better employed announcing the previous night’s football results. Or publishing suggestions as to what exactly goes on inside Ken Livingstone’s head.
