Shields are up but someone has nicked the wheels
Welcome to Car Trek-Deep Space 9mph.
Thatcham, the alarm people, have brought a little but of science fiction into the world of science fact- the car that can’t crash.
Over 70 per cent of accidents are low-speed shunts and bumps but lead to 120,000 injuries a year.
The not-for-profit research organisation is looking at three systems that would prevent minor accidents. When it is launched late this year the Volvo XC60 will be fitted with Volvo City Safety which is a laser radar unit active up to 20mph that applies the brakes and cuts the throttle.
Mercedes Distronic is already fired to some S-class models and uses the cruise control and radar to keep a distance between you and the car in front. Honda has a similar system.
Now there’s a thought; in 1980 Tomorrow’s World got all excited about the telephone that goes anywhere with you. Yes, like the one you have in your pocket but without the internet link, MP3 player, electronic office, camera, video recorder and player and tasteful wallpaper.
So, in 28 years time it is entirely conceivable we will have cars that drive themselves.
Raise shields, Mr Sulu
