Still no word from Ford but Rodrigues writes:
I have had the problem for 18 months, it appears to happen during damp weather & does not affect the cars performance. I saw on another site that if you take the cluster out & spray the board with WD40 let it dry & then re-assemble it seems to cure the problem. It has nothing to do with the engine management system or the vehicle speed sensor. I tried the WD40 idea & so far so good.
Well, that's one for the DIY fans. By the way, there is a new Focus in March, I wonder....
